Elegant design in high-impact plastic to hold over one gallon of water in minimal space.Has a 1/2 gallon reservoir & an ultra quiet, submersible pump to continuously circulate the water. Pre-filter traps any debris while the three layer charcoal filter removes smaller impurities. Water is returned to the large bowl via a gentle cascade from the 8 1/2" high elevated spout. Tips on use: When being introduced to the Drinkwell Platinum, your pet will probably have the good sense to be cautious of this new and unusual object. After beginning operation of the fountain, just let your pet adjust at his or her own pace. Some pets take several days or longer to begin use. Ice cubes can be added to the bowl for refreshing ice-cold running water.
Operation: Fill with water and plug unit in to begin continuous re-circulation. Add water to the bowl as needed. Water first falls onto a ramp in the bowl, which reduces the noise and splash of falling water. Yet the flowing action still breaks the surface tension of the bowl water to draw in oxygen from the air and aerate the water. Aerated water tastes fresher. You can see it working by the tiny bubbles it creates.
Why Animals Love Running Water
In nature, moving water is much fresher than stagnant water. The movement constantly breaks the surface tension of the water and draws oxygen from the air into the water. This process is called aeration and it makes water more appealing to drink. Pets may be drawn by instinct to moving water for this reason.
The DRINKWELL PET FOUNTAIN filters and aerates continuously moving water to keep it much fresher than standing bowl water. It satisfies the urge for running water and so helps eliminate jumping on counters in search of dripping faucets.
Even cats who don't jump on counters to drink from faucets may drink more water using the Fountain. Why is this important? As the veterinarian who created the Fountain for her own dogs knows, many pets may not drink as much water as they should. This is one reason the urine becomes so concentrated and predisposes some pets to urinary tract disease. Pets with urinary tract or kidney disease have a critical need for water to support kidney function or prevent crystal formation and obstruction.
